Background to Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a martial art that was developed in Korea during the 20th century, though based upon more traditional martial arts. The 3 parts of the word "taekwondo" have been variously translated as "the way of the hands and feet" or "the art of kicking and punching".

Taekwondo today is similar to the martial arts in other Oriental countries and shares some features with them, because in the course of its evolution it has gained many different styles that existed in the martial arts of the countries surrounding Korea, like Japan and China. But Taekwondo is very different from many such oriental martial arts in that it is very dynamic with active movements that include a mirage of foot skills.

As a martial art, the practitioner aims to improve his or her way of life and better themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. It teaches etiquette, discipline and self control.

As a sport, its fast kicking and explosive techniques helps improve an individual's fitness level, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. It enhances competitive spirit, evolving and developing each individual's skills and techniques.
