About Zumba Fitness

Zumba mixes body sculpting movements with a variety of latin dance steps. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms.

The unique Latin inspired international music and dance steps create a dynamic, exciting and effective fitness system. Non-verbal cuing allows the class to feel the music and movements rather than listen for directions from the instructor.

Zumba is great for the mind, body and soul!

Angela de Oliveira

Photo of Angela de OliveiraBorn in Mozambique, Angela De Oliveira has been involved in sports teams, athletics and dance from an early age.

A growing interest in sport led her to study successfully for a degree Certificate in Sport and train as an athletics coach, specialising in children's motor skills and nutrition for female athletes.

To continue her personal and professional development, she attended and taught seminars across Europe in martial arts, yoga, indoors and outdoors fitness circuits.

She then introduced dance into her aerobic classes including, of course, Zumba.

Angela has over 15 years dance experience to draw on and has created her own dance freestyle workout exercise programme as a result of realizing how beneficial dance is for your health. It is not only a good aerobic activity, but is fun to do and helps with co-ordination, posture, self confidence and balance.

Your Secret to Sizzling Zumba

Tighten and Define Abs Trim Hips and Thighs Tone Shoulders and Arms

Latin moves like the Diamond Step involve raising the arms overhead, which forces the heart to work harder to pump blood through the body. This prompts cells to burn calories more quickly. The position also targets the triceps and deltoids to sculpt arms and shoulders. And rotating the hips engages the obliques to cinch the waistline.

Zumba Fitness Cartoon 1To do: Standing with your feet more than hip-width apart, lift your hands above your head with palms facing forward so they form a diamond shape. Push your arms to the left, then step sideways with your left leg. Next, push your arms to the right and follow with a step to the right. Alternate arm movements and steps to the beat of music for 1 minute.

The Tobago Caribbean is the best move to melt inches off the thighs. Sliding the leg to the side of the body engages the hard-to-tone adductors (inner-thigh muscles), abductors (outer-thigh muscles) and hip flexors, tightening jiggles and eliminating saddlebags. Plus, pointing and flexing tones calf muscles to ensure gorgeous gams.

Zumba Fitness Cartoon 2To do: Stand on your left leg and slide your right leg as far to the right as possible with your toes pointed. Circle your right leg forward until it’s straight out in front of you, then flex your foot. Step onto your right foot and repeat the same move with your left leg. Continue alternating sides for 1 minute. (For bonus arm and belly toning, swing arms back and forth while stepping.)

The Calypso Basic delivers superior fat blasting, thanks to its combination of pumping the arms and marching in place. This engages the upper body and lower body simultaneously to maximize metabolic activity in every muscle cell. In addition, the arm movement fully engages the deltoids, pectorals, biceps and triceps to get rid of arm jiggle and define the chest and shoulders.

zumba fitness cartoon 3To do: Bend your arms at a 90-degree angle and begin marching in place. As you step, bring one arm forward, curling your bicep while simultaneously swinging your opposite arm straight back to fully extend the tricep. Hint: Squeeze the shoulder blade to intensify the move. Continue alternating arms while marching for 1 minute.
